Disasters (see Worst case scenario) are major events that can strike anywhere and at any time. In a disaster, traditional 9-1-1 and First Responder capabilities such as fire, police, medics, and utility personnel will be overwhelmed and unable to immediately assist individuals. (more)

Preparing your neighborhood is vital. Neighbors will likely be the first ones to offer you assistance. Neighbors that are prepared are more effective in their response to a disaster and have an increased capacity to be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours after a disaster.

Take action today. Begin by thinking about who you consider your neighbors to be. The rule of thumb is to limit your neighborhood to those homes you can reach within fifteen (15) minutes because the first hour of a disaster response is vital and you want the size of your neighborhood to be manageable. The Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) program provides excellent guidance on what to do next, as do many local programs. (Source)

“Map Your Neighborhood (MYN)” Synopsis

“Map Your Neighborhood (MYN)” is a program designed to help neighborhoods prepare for disasters.  

Program Synopsis:

Learn the “9 Steps to Take Immediately Following a Disaster” to secure your home and to protect your neighborhood. It is hard to think clearly following disaster and these steps will help you to quickly and safely take actions that can minimize damage and protect lives.

Identify the Skills and Equipment each neighbor has that would be useful in an effective disaster response. Knowing which neighbors have supplies and skills helps your disaster response be timely, and allows everyone to contribute to the response in a meaningful way.

Create a Neighborhood Map identifying the locations of natural gas and propane tanks for quick response if needed.

Create a Contact List that helps identify those with specific needs such as elderly, disabled, or children who may be home alone during certain hours of the day.

Work together as a team to evaluate your neighborhood after a disaster and take the necessary actions.

Remember: In a disaster, your most immediate source of help are the neighbors living around you. (Click here to view the WA state MYN program)

Do you want to host your own MYN meeting?

1. Contact the MIEP Team for training information, presentation options, and materials (Rural version of the MYN Neighbor Handout, MYN Flyer, Discussion Guide, CD and DVD).

2. Review all materials, CD and DVD.

3. Choose a date and alternate date and time for the meeting.

4. Determine your neighborhood boundaries (sample map). The rule of thumb is to limit your neighborhood to those homes you can reach within fifteen (15) minutes because the first hour of a disaster response is vital and you want the size of your neighborhood to be manageable. When you begin to think about who you will invite to your MYN meeting, click on http://neighbors.whitepages.com/ and type in an address (yours) and zip code to list who your neighbors are and their phone numbers. Please note that the tool has limitations and errors like some of the residence markers are misplaced and may not exist if the owner users P.O. Boxes.

5. Personally invite your neighbors to attend your neighborhood meeting.

   1. Give them a MYN flyer with a note attached to it with a summary of the MYN meeting details.

6. Conduct your meeting in one of the following ways:

• 1. Use the DVD to direct the meeting. (2-3 hours) (See "Monthly MYN meetings at Hubbard's" that lasts 3:15 hours.)

  2. Invite Janet Welch to conduct the meeting. 

  3. Use the simple-to-follow Discussion Guide. (Warning: Large 25 page PDF) 

7. Start and end your meeting on time. 

8. After the meeting, email the following information to mi-ep@googlegroups.com:

• 1. Host Name

  2. Host Address

  3. Date of Meeting

  4. Number of Households Participating

We encourage Island neighborhoods to host and attend MYN meetings and are eager to help you set up a MYN team in your neighborhood.
