Below is (the beginning of) a list of scenarios (starting with SCEN01) and “Questions” that could help us to think about how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from an emergency or a disaster.
Click here to send us your scenarios, responses, comments, or questions. We will add them to this MIEP web page - Scenarios (MI Emergency Preparedness) - for future reference. They may be edited for clarity, brevity, etc.. We will not cite you as the author unless you ask us to do so.
A 9.0 earthquake has occurred, the Portage Canal bridge is closed indefinitely and trees block many roads
Most of the Island boats are either damaged or missing because of the tsunami. A few could be used to ferry supplies (if there are any) between us and Port Hadlock and Port Townsend.
Port Hadlock and Port Townsend are severally damaged
We can not expect outside help for at least two weeks.
SCEN01: QFC and Safeway stores will be empty of food in a week or so
Situation:
- The Worst case scenario has happened. We just had a 9.0 earthquake and there was a large tsunami
- Portage Canal bridge is closed indefinitely
- Port Hadlock and Port Townsend are severally damaged
- QFC and Safeway stores will be empty of food in a week or so.
- Most of the Island boats are either damaged or missing because of the tsunami. A few could be used to ferry supplies (if there are any) between us and Port Hadlock and Port Townsend IF people can get to them past all of the trees blocking most of the roads.
- There is no power on the Island. Only a few families have generators or solar banks.
- We can not expect outside help for at least two weeks.
Questions:
- Q01: "A refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed" (Sources). Starting on the 3rd day, the food will spoil. The choice is to throw it out or to share it with others. If you wanted to share it with others, how would you do that if you had no phone service? What would be your plan?

SCEN02: Heidi has a broken leg and Pete is not home
Situation:
- The Worst case scenario has happened. We just had a 9.0 earthquake and there was a large tsunami
- Portage Canal bridge is closed indefinitely
- We can not expect outside help for at least two weeks.
- Port Hadlock and Port Townsend are severally damaged
- Pete had to go to an appointment in Port Townsend.
- A tree fell on their home and debris fell inside and broke Heidi's leg.
- Heidi remembers that Pete could use his walkie talkie (WT) and talk to Patti Ivers down the road and Chris Prescott on ? road. She crawls to the pantry to find the WTs in the emergency box there. She turns it on and it is dead. She finds new batteries in the box, inserts them, turns it on and talks to Patti because Patti knew to turn on her WT immediately after a disaster.
- Patti tells Heidi that there are trees down her driveway and on Schwartz Road between us. She says she will call our Neighborhood Coordinator (NC) to look at the list of resources in our neighborhood to find a medic or someone who can help Heidi. The NC can't find the resource so calls the Area Coordinator who has three (3) people who can help, but it will be an hour or so since they have to crawl over all the downed trees. The AC calls two neighbors who have chain saws and one will start clearing Heidi's driveway ASAP. He also tells Patti that the bridge is down.
- WTs are cheap, cheap, cheap insurance
